Your Garden in February

Your Garden in February:

Here are some tasks that you can consider doing in your garden in February:

  1. Prune winter-flowering shrubs, such as mahonia and viburnum, after they have finished flowering.

  2. Cut back any remaining perennials that have died back over the winter.

  3. Check your stored dahlia tubers and divide any that have become crowded.

  4. Plant fruit trees, such as apples, pears, plums and cherries.

  5. Start seeds of tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables indoors in seed trays or pots.

  6. Apply a general-purpose lawn fertilizer to your lawn to give it a boost for the growing season.

  7. Start to prepare your vegetable beds for planting by adding compost or well-rotted manure.

  8. Check your garden for winter damage and make any necessary repairs.

  9. Start planning your summer border by making a sketch of the garden and deciding on a colour scheme.

  10. Check your garden tools and equipment and sharpen or replace any that need it. February is a good time to prune, but make sure your garden tools are cleaned before and after use.
